Nice to meet you, glad you could make it
Dreamy, synth-driven melodies, cinematic progressions, honeyed pop vocals, and punchy beats – this is the sonic palate of indie-pop darlings Emerger - the musical fusion of band- and life-mates, Emma Goode (lead vocalist/pianist) and Gerry Matthee (producer/multi-instrumentalist).
The duo met in high school and studied side-by-side working toward music degrees at the University of Cape Town. Goode’s crystalline vocals are at once intimate and soaring, floating across bouncing grooves and fat, 80s/90s-inspired synth textures rounded out by Matthee’s tasteful guitar and bass parts and highly refined production chops.
After a pandemic-induced pause, Emerger has released a slate of new music, including singles like “Aeroplane Park”, “Ghost In The Machine”, “Tangerine Sky”, State of Mind” and “Round We Go”, slaking the thirst of their ever-growing fanbase as the duo continues to refine their irresistible sound.
Their dynamic live show is filled with indie-pop gems polished to perfection. They frequently perform with a full band, making their music come to life on stage in exciting ways. Most notably, they’ve played the main stage at Up The Creek Festival and the TicketPro Dome for MediaTech Africa. They’ve played numerous venues across South Africa and have opened for some of SA’s biggest acts including GoodLuck, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Francois van Coke.
Emerger’s self-produced debut mini-album Bloom received international acclaim, with their first single "Break & Fall" selected from nearly 5000 entrants as winner of the Avid and Abbey Road Studios Song Contest. Since then, the group has been showcased multiple times by BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 6 Music, featured in various Apple Music editorial playlists (including its “Best Of” playlist and "New Artist Spotlight") and featured in various official Spotify playlists (including “New Music Fridays South Africa”, “Feel Good Look Good” and “SAlt”).
Expect to see much more from this up-and-coming duo in the months ahead, including their much anticipated full-length album.
